Professor Flanagan reports that "Compared to the widespread acceptance of digital devices as evidenced by millions of apps, ubiquitous smartphones and the distribution of iPads in schools surprisingly few studies exist about how digital tools affect our understanding - our cognition."
The study, High-Low Split: Divergent Cognitive Construal Levels Triggered by Digital and Non-digital Platforms (co-written and presented at CHI 2016 by Geoff Kaufman of Carnegie Mellon University) is described in EurekAlert!; stories reporting on the study have appeared in the Huffington Post, Doncaster Free Press, Fox News, and The Washington Post.
