    Deer, who grew up in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake in Quebec, was 12 when her father started renting a VHS player and movies. That's when she set her sights on a career in film, an "impossible dream for an Indigenous girl," she says, "but I wanted it so badly."

    The filmmaker will present the award, which "recognizes excellence in filmmaking by a female-identifying filmmaker who embodies the spirit of artistic integrity, mentorship to young filmmakers, community collaboration, and commitment to social justice that have defined Vermont filmmaker Nora Jacobson's career."

    This year's ceremony will be held virtually on the Hop's YouTube channel on Tuesday, May 25 at 4:30 pm. Tracey Deer '00, Mohawk screenwriter, award-winning filmmaker, director, and showrunner, will be on the program as an honored guest. We hope you will join us virtually on the 25th!
