At Dartmouth, Shonda Rhimes ’91 Learned to Be a Leader

One of TIME magazine's most influential people of 2021 shares her student experience.

The winning screenwriter, producer, author, and CEO of the global media company Shondaland, says Dartmouth prepared her to lead in the arts. As a senior, she ran the Black Underground Theater Association. "And it was a lot of work! I was not an extroverted person, so it was a very different experience. Suddenly, I was the leader; I was in charge," she says.
